DCP, aka PIVKA II is independent of other HCC biomarkers AFP and AFP-L3. Therefore, DCP allows detection in HCC patients who might otherwise be missed by AFP and AFP-L3 measurements. Moreover, DCP is excellent in differentiating early HCC from cirrhosis. Patients who test positive for DCP often show features of HCC that are different from those who test positive for AFP-L3. An elevated DCP level corresponds to advanced tumor characteristics and poor patient outcome.
